ABOUT
MATTY is a Japanese music composer, record producer, and music editor working across film and television.
Drawn to both music and storytelling from a young age, Matty began composing at just 13 with his percussion group 5 Days Forever at Yokohama International School.
Fluent in both English and Japanese, he bridges Eastern and Western influences, crafting emotionally rich and cinematic soundscapes.
A graduate of Berklee College of Music (Film Scoring), Matty launched his career in Los Angeles, composing for director Rick Kumazawa’s short film My Eye’s On You (starring Chikako Fukuyama) while interning under acclaimed composer Christopher Young during the pandemic.
He now works full-time as a music editor and song arranger for Emmy Award–winning composer Nathan Wang, while continuing to compose original scores for both feature and short films.
Matty continues to collaborate internationally, blending Japanese musical heritage with the cinematic storytelling traditions of Hollywood.
Whether scoring for film, theatre, or live performance, his music aims to deepen emotion, illuminate character, and connect audiences around the world.
Matty’s creative roots trace back to early Japanese cinema. His great-grandparents, Heihachiro Machii (director / cinematographer) and Fumiko Koide (script supervisor), worked at Toho Kyoto Studios (formerly Bando Productions) during the 1920s — a cornerstone of Japan’s jidaigeki (samurai film) era.
After Machii’s passing, Fumiko became a poet in Nagano and formed a close friendship with artist Chihiro Iwasaki, both raising children while pursuing art in difficult times. Their perseverance and creativity continue to inspire Matty’s dedication to storytelling through music.
Member of the Television Academy’s Sound Editors, Music Editor (Emmys)
“Working with MATTY, the composer for my short psychological horror film "Canary," has been an absolute pleasure. "Canary" premiered at the LA Shorts International Film Festival, an Academy Award qualifying festival, in July 2023 and it has since garnered recognition at six other festivals and counting.
MATTY’s collaborative nature was truly exceptional. He took my often ambiguous notes and translated them into a hauntingly evocative score that consistently exceeded my expectations.”
Taka Tsubota (Director, Writer, Editor)
“Matty always made the process fun, productive and inspiring. I can confidently say Matty showed a strong technical understanding of music while also aligning with my preference and taste as a director. I highly respect Matty as a creative peer and a vibrant young man. He has so much to offer as an artist, musician, and all around kind-hearted friend.”
